Time
So wells of wealth. As we all probably already know, there are many different wells of wealth and they can come if all sorts of different shapes and sizes, physics and forms. These wells of wealth can be shaped differently for every individual, and what we deem a well of wealth grows as we water our beliefs with outside experiences as they accumulate over the years. Things perhaps such as money, valor, and the ability to make friends are all things that the majority of us consider wells of wealth. Qualities that we deem important. But there is one quality that could be considered the foundation of them all, one little well of wealth that can easily be overlooked, perhaps because of the abundance of it, or in over cases, the seeming lack of it. That well of wealth would be time. Which when I think about it, time can relate to every single thing that grows up and around the walls of our brains. That can make things grow. And die. Or flourish in abundance. And it relates to the novel in which we have just red, The Great Gatsby as well.
The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells of the fading American Dream and its different faces, the voyage to obtain success, the literal definition of success to the various characters, and the millionaire Gatsby's quest to win a girl named Daisy's heart back as he had it before the war. The novel focuses on the importance of money, how it equals success, but also the importance of relationships as Gatsby was rich, but not happy without Daisy. How he wanted to win Daisy’s heart, but also for other reasons than just to be with her. She was the image of what he had always wanted in life; money and the status of the upper-class. And to win her would be to win her luxurious aura as well. Her voice that was said to be “full of money”. The Great Gatsby is a novel all about wells of wealth. Including time, which we all know has its own importance. It can also be overlooked sometimes as described here, "I always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it" (Fitzgerald). In this line from the Great Gatsby we see how time can be a tricky thing. How it can creep up on us slowing with only a little acknowledging from us but then slither up and around, then it’s gone. Which demonstrates the importance of proper time management in order to obtain success.
Time is a quality made up of components and aspects. If one aspect or component is missing, then time won’t work on our side. Such as the aspect of time management, which is also a very important component of success. Say we want to start up a small business. There are many things to do and tasks here and there that are required to get on top of. Without the adequate amount of time and its proper management of course, the idea will never evolve into a reality, it will stay just on paper forever, or in a keen mind if no time was given to get the idea out onto the paper. And that would mean no success for that plan. Which is not good. And in this line, it is shown how time can create importance as well. “―He smiled understandingly – much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life.” (48 Fitzgerald) This line also demonstrates the same aspect of time’s importance. “―It excited him, too, that many men had already loved Daisy – it increased her value in his eyes" (149 Fitzgerald).
And other aspects of success, such as developing good, lasting relationships with others when I think about it, are all built of the foundation of time as well. If you do not put in time into a relationship, it will not grow into a strong tree with deep roots that cling into the earth. Time is like water in this aspect. It rains down and makes things grow.
And with goals that we wish to accomplish, they all require time thrown into the mixture in order to become a reality. With enough time stirred into the mixture, along with hardworking-ness (which might have to be found of its own) it is scientifically proven that is can create all different varieties of genius according to a BBC chess documentary in which I saw once. It said that if enough time is dedicated to a certain area, eventually that certain area will merge into a certain part of the brain in which long term memories are retained. The same place where the memory of that one rogue mushroom that grew in the bathroom during the moist spring holidays, the unforgettable no matter what memory storage compartment bin. A quote from the Great Gatsby said "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" (1 Fitzgerald). This is one of the lines that also explain the importance of what you do with that time. To feel different things and accomplish different things.
In the novel the Great Gatsby time is one of the wells of wealth that is definitely present, but can be easily overlooked. Time is tied to success with time management, time poured into our relationships, and time devoted to the improvement of success. This quote, "Can't repeat the past? ....Why of course you can!?” (Fitzgerald) shows how time can be used effectively, and of course ineffectively. We all get an equal amount of time in life, more or less. It is just how we decide to use it that make all of our lives different.
